Ellittico, di Beffe e Elegie
Composed in 2010, and performed numerous times across London and the UK, Ellittico, di Beffe e Elegie (Elliptical, of Joke and Elegies) is an important, substantial composition for violin, clarinet and piano trio that articulates across six movements. In it, the harmonic structure follows the shape of an ellipsis, enabling modulating set of pitches to travel around a tonal centre. At the same time, the piece's movements and melodic material alternate scherzi and elegies, depicting mundane and spiritual moods, ultimately aiming to captures a wide, complex universe: a universe equally comprising earthy and transcendental moods.
Ellittico, di Beffe e Elegie, although being a challenging work, both technically and musically, also is an accessible composition that directly moves the listener. Lyrical melodies intertwine with sophisticated counterpoints, highly rhythmical gestures drive towards eccentric amalgams, elegiac lines elevate to irrational figurations, funky impulses converge towards gravitational epicentres. Ellittico, di Beffe e Elegie is a rich, absorbing work, excellent for chamber music programmes wishing to stimulate new audiences.
This composition has been recently recorder by internationally known musicians Alda Dizdari, Ruben Lopes Jacinto, and Giulia Semerano, at London's St Pancras Clock Tower, and it is due to be published as part of a new album in late 2025.
